What is a PBA? A PBA (Prescribed Burn Association) is simply landowners helping other landowners burn their property. Think of it like a coop, you come help me burn and I'll come help you burn.
Why Should I join a PBA? Qualified help is hard to find when its time to burn. Sure, you can get a few buddies together but do they have any experience if things get out of hand?.....Probably not! Members of a PBA are trained to help you get the safest and best burn possible to help accomplish your goals on your property. Plus, as a PBA member you have access to an enclosed trailer full of equipment to help you successfully light as well as contain the burn to the area you intended.
How do I join a PBA? At the top of this website, click the tab that says "Local PBA Chapters". Find your county on the map to see if its highlighted to show that a chapter exists there. If so, the contact info is provided at the bottom of the page; contact the person in charge of that PBA and pay your annual dues which is usually $25-$30 per year.
What if there isn't a PBA in my county? Our goal is to have a PBA established in every county of the state. All we need is a few landowners or habitat managers that are willing to come together and let us know that they are interested. Once we have that, we will start working toward helping get you set up and equipped with the paperwork to open a bank account as well as a trailer and equipment. We operate through grants and donations, so we are often limited on funds but we do our best to stretch it as far as we can each year.
What kind of training is available? Currently the Forestry Commission along with AGFC is putting on Certified Prescribed Burner Workshops across the state. These are 2 day classes that are set up to train individual's to write their own burn plans as well as burn their property in compliance with Act 695. Visit AGFC's Private Lands website for dates and locations.
What is Act 695? Act 695 was established to reduce landowner liability while executing prescribed fire on their property. You can read all about this act here.
Will the Arkansas Prescribed Burn Association come burn my property? No, we aren't burn contractors. We are landowners ourselves that have volunteered our time, resource's and connections to help get other landowners and managers the knowledge and tools they need to be able to comfortably burn their own property through the assistance of other landowners and managers in the local PBA they join.
